Krampus Night December 5, 2009
9:00PM - 12:00AM
Price:  donation
To thank our amazing community and volunteers, Eyedrum is throwing a Krampus Nacht party this Saturday, December 5th.

What is Krampus, you ask? He’s kind of the holiday boogeyman, the antithesis of Santa Claus. There are two takes on Krampus, one being a secular humanist approach and the other being a magic tradition angle.

The word Krampus originates from the Old High German word for claw (Krampen). The tradition is primarily an Austrian thing, although it spread erratically around Europe. In the Alpine regions the Krampus is represented by an incubus demon in company of Saint Nicholas. Krampus acts as an anti-Santa Claus where instead of giving gifts to good children, he gives warnings and punishments to the bad children. On Dec. 5, the eve of the feast day of St. Nick, Austrians celebrate Krampus by running across the city in grotesque masks and generally scaring children. This is an extension of the good-cop, bad-cop theory. St. Nick makes his rounds on Dec. 6 rewarding all the good little children,

Traditionally, young men dress up as the Krampus in the evening of December 5, wearing chains around his neck, ankles and wrists, and wearing a cloth sack around their waists, and roam the streets frightening children and women with rusty chains and bells. There’s more about Krampus Nacht at http://absent-cause.blogspot.com/2007/12/krampusnacht.html and photos and art of Krampus and his fellow demons at Flickr.

Join us at 9PM for a celebration with the anti-Claus. Admission is free (but donations are always appreciated); there will be food, music, and everyone is encouraged to dress in his or her Krampus best.
