Your Head is Full of Stars
9:00PM - - -
Price:  $10, $8

Crossover Movement Arts and Zentropy present "Your Head is Full of Stars," an evening of improvisational dance and music, Friday, March 12 at Eyedrum Art and Music Gallery. This live performance will explore the meeting of accident and intention. The dancers and musicians will create the performance in the moment, their improvisations given shape through predetermined structures.

"How do we as artists use all the tools of our training and experience without being limited by them?" asks Crossover Movement Arts artistic director Blake Dalton, who also performs as part of Several Dancers Core's Core Performance Company. The question speaks to the dual challenges of an improvisational performance: to unleash the creative spirit of each artist within the performative moment while still crafting into each work a distinct and dynamic character, development and quality. "We are diligently sweating through different approaches to movement improvisation," says Dalton, "constantly seeking different entrances into the art of instant choreography."

Plans for the show were first sparked by Allen Welty-Green, artistic director of Zentropy, an improvisational band that combines elements of improvisational jazz, electronica, and experimental music. Welty-Green, who is also chair of the board of directors at Eyedrum, had previously collaborated with other dancers in both traditionally choreographed works and works that included elements of improvisation. Welty-Green was interested in attempting a show in which both music and movement were entirely improvised. He reached out to Tom Bell, program director of the Decatur Book Festival, an avid improvisational dancer, and a member of Crossover Movement Arts. Soon after, a collaboration between Zentropy and Crossover Movement Arts was born.

"I am very excited about the synergy between music and dance," says Welty-Green, "and this project attempts to capture that synergy in its rawest form. It's spontaneous composition meets spontaneous choreography."

Join us for this live laboratory. Watch us work, experiment and play. Breathe the same air with us as we chase movement and music, as we soar and sometimes fall. Feel free to watch with one eye closed, turn your head upside down, come and go. Your head is already full of stars. We just hope they shine a little differently after you spend some time with us.

Crossover Movement Arts is a continually evolving community of creative movers finding different ways to examine and delight in the ritual of performance.

Zentropy

The name says it all. Sometimes the zen of the moment takes the sound into exciting directions, but order and structure can break down as entropy ensues. Such is the nature of improv, and such is the nature of Zentropy....
Keyboardist Allen Welty-Green, percussionist Davis Petterson & bassist Gabriel Monticello create spontaneous music. It's improvised but is it jazz? It's spacey but is it jam?
