Dan Melchior is a musician/artist (artist/musician?) from London, England who now lives in Durham, NC. He has appeared on over 30 commercially released recordings, and continues to produce several new recordings every year.
Melchior favours a rough hewn and immediate approach in all his artistic endeavours, and the canvasses he produces are perhaps the clearest indication of this. Over the last 2 years or so (since having the space to do so) he has been working solidly and consistently on his painting and has produced a sizeable body of work. Looking to the work of Philip Guston, Willem de Kooning and Max Beckmann (amongst others) as touchstones, Melchior feels that he's finally managed to produce work free of the restrictions that he found imposed on him (and that he subsequently internalised) during his time at various art schools in the UK.
Melchior hopes that his work conveys a sense of joy and wonder at the process of actually putting paint on canvas, and also manages to impart a sense of humour at odds with the often very solemn and emotionally uptight work that tends to pre dominate in high art circles today.
Running through June 14th
