BMF: The Rise and Fall of Big Meech and the Black March 2, 2010
7:00PM - 10:00PM

BMF: The Rise and Fall of Big Meech and the Black Mafia Family (St. Martin's Press)

In the early 1990s, Demetrius "Big Meech" Flenory and his brother, Terry "Southwest T," rose up from the slums of Detroit to build one of the largest cocaine empires in American history: the Black Mafia Family. After a decade in the drug game, the Flenorys had it all -- a fleet of Maybachs, Bentleys and Ferraris, a 500-man workforce operating in six states, and an estimated quarter of a billion in drug sales. They socialized with music mogul Sean "Diddy" Combs, did business with New York's king of bling Jacob "The Jeweler" Arabo, and built allegiances with rap superstars Young Jeezy and Fabolous.

Yet even as BMF was attracting celebrity attention, its crew members created a cult of violence that struck fear in Atlanta and threatened to spill beyond the boundaries of the drug underworld. Ruthlessness fueled BMF's rise to incredible power; greed and that same ruthlessness led to their downfall.

Creative Loafing Senior Editor Mara Shalhoup will be reading from her book about BMF, which stems from a series of articles she wrote in 2006. A photography show chronicling BMF in its heyday, including works from Atlanta photographer David Stuart, will also be on display. Be among the first to purchase the book, which hits the streets that day.

PLATINUM CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING

Professional Wrestling is a part of Georgia's artistic, sports, and cultural history, but the current form of so-called "sports entertainment" from the two national companies show little respect or acknowledgement of pro wrestling's storied past. Platinum Championship Wrestling strives to change the entire face and structure of pro wrestling by presenting shows that not only feature the excitement and physical skill of modern wrestling, but create the kind of audience interaction and involvement that made wrestling great in days past. Platinum Championship Wrestling is saving pro wrestling, once match at a time.

OBSCURA

Curated by Joey Vicory + Lisa Thrower

March 20 – April 30, 2010 (update: extended 1 week!)

"Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there, wondering, fearing, doubting...dreaming dreams no mortal ever dreamed before." - Poe

Obscura is an exhibition of new works that are created to be self-illuminated and thereby only fully revealed and understood in an environment of total darkness.

Each piece will require intimacy, time and thoughtfulness on the part of the viewer - the exhibition as a whole is meant to fully engage the eyes and mind.

Artist Talk: March 25 - 7pm - FREE

Artists:
C.W. Anderson, Larry Anderson, Karen Cleveland, Truett Dietz, Jane Garver, Duane Georges, Karen Hennessee, Matt Howard, Andy Imm, Stephen Kennedy, Heather Lewis, Sean McCormick, Matthew Moore, Cooper Sanchez, Olive Shaner & Cynthia Zarilli.

March 20: Special Event
“Throwie Workshop” with Obscura artist Olive Shaner

Come to the Obscura opening and learn how to make a "throwie" – a tiny LED sculpture that can be thrown and stuck on to outdoor surfaces as an innovative and temporary form of graffiti.

April 11: Dance - Choreography/Performance by: Ellen Lyle, Sophie Slesinger, and dancers.

This collective of young Atlanta artists, inspired by the visual images of Obscura, will present a movement gallery within the Eyedrum space. This new work will highlight the architecture and intricacy of the floorplan. Similar to a gallery walk, viewers will be guided through the Obscura exhibition as the dancers migrate.
