Exhibit essay by Richard Gess

In celebration of the darkening season, we present Dead Flowers: Haunted Gardens; Seeded Wastelands.

This investigation explores the cycle of life/death/rebirth in the garden, including such topics as the Memorial Garden (cemetery), Victorian florigraphy (The Language of Flowers), vanitas, sterile corporate gardens, plastic flowers and genetically modified flora, as well as other botanical mysteries.

The 6-week exhibition time includes late October/early November cyclic celebrations of Halloween/Samhain, All Saints Day, Dia De Los Muertos/Day of the Dead, and All Souls Day.
In conjunction with the Dead Flowers art exhibit, auxiliary programming will be offered during this time of year when "the veil is thinnest between the realms of the living & the dead."
