8:00PM - - -
Price:  $16

TABLE OF THE ELEMENTS Festival No.4
DAY 2: Carnivals of Ecstasy - Tony Conrad and the New York Underground

An Evening in the 1960s Underground
Hosted by Tony Conrad (New York)
plus a musical performance by Hubcap City (Atlanta)

SEE Jack Smith's "Flaming Creatures" in 16mm and Ira Cohen's "Invasion of Thunderbolt Pagoda" in a new version! SEE the premiere of a new work by Cohen!
HEAR soundtracks by the legendary Tony Conrad and Angus MacLise!
SEE and HEAR Tony introduce the films!

Angus MacLise in Ira Cohen's "Invasion of Thunderbolt Pagoda"

Tony Conrad has been a key figure of the New York avant-garde since the early 1960s. He is well-known as a musician for his role (along with John Cale, LaMonte Young and others) in the Dream Syndicate, and as a filmmaker he created 1965’s classic “The Flicker.”

Lesser known is the fact that Conrad played an important role in the creation of works by other filmmakers, some of which are among the most popular and enduring avant-garde films of the 1960s. Frequent Small Meals and Table of the Elements are proud to host Tony Conrad for a unique event at Eyedrum. Conrad will introduce films by Jack Smith, Ron Rice, Piero Heliczer, and Ira Cohen – films in which Conrad appears or for which he did soundtrack work.

** Jack Smith’s “Flaming Creatures” is one of the most controversial films ever made. Groundbreaking for its polysexual imagery, it is widely admired today as a prime example of the artistry, humor, and visual brilliance of this visionary director and performer. “Flaming Creatures” will be screened in its original format of 16mm, along with Ron Rice’s “Chumlum,” a sumptuous pre-psychedelic work from the early 1960s with a typically charismatic Jack Smith performance.

** Like "Chumlum," Ira Cohen’s “Invasion of Thunderbolt Pagoda” features a musical score by the legendary percussionist (and Conrad collaborator) Angus MacLise, best known as the original drummer for the Velvet Underground. J. Hoberman of the Village Voice called MacLise’s score a “masterpiece of Tibetan-Moroccan-Druidic trance music [which] truly blossoms in conjunction with the exotic smorgasbord served at Cohen's psychedelicatessen.” The evening also features a world-premiere of a new Cohen work, “Brain Damage.”

** Piero Heliczer’s 1967 “Joan of Arc” features a mesmerizing soundtrack by Conrad. This extremely rare film has not been screened outside of New York in many years and represents one of Conrad’s finest musical performances.

program:
PART 1
Joan of Arc (Piero Heliczer, 1967), 15 minutes, 16mm (screened on DVD)
Chumlum (Ron Rice, 1964), 22 minutes, 16mm
Flaming Creatures (Jack Smith, 1963), 42 minutes, 16mm
PART 2 – Ira Cohen premieres
Invasion of Thunderbolt Pagoda, expanded edition (Ira Cohen, 1967/2006)

Chodorov uses flicker, negative/positive imagery, different printing techniques and colored filters to produce a film that is a true merging of sound and vision.

THE INFO DEMONS PRESENT

INFO DEMO VERSION 2.4

“little things mean a lot”

Good things come in small packages, but the Devil is in the details. Are you mired in minutiae? Have you been suckered by the small print? How did the Cooper Mini get so big? What about that little lie that turned into a huge argument? Or Jack’s little bean that brought giants down on his head? They all laughed at “Fantastic Voyage,” but with the advent of nano-technology, who’s to say that Raquel Welch won’t soon be driving her submarine into an artery near you? How many angels can dance on the head of a pin, and how can you get a camel through the eye of a needle?
(Only the God of Small Things knows.)

Christopher “Size Matters” Stevens and Terra Elan “Micro-Mini” McVoy, a.k.a.
The Info Demons, invite you to join them to explore the little things...

Presenters Include:

Birdy from Good n' Plenty doing a wee bit o' burlesque

Al Kaufman on being not-so-well-endowed

Amanda Burk giving us a walking tour through tinyisms

Deidra Currie on the importance of small things

Terra Elan McVoy on The Nutshell Studies of Unexplained Death

Readings and poems!

Arthur Doyle/ Ed Wilcox/ Jamie Harrar, Konx September 15, 2006
9:00PM - - -

photo ctsy carbon records

One of our favorite saints of free jazz Arthur Doyle returns for his first show in Atlanta in....well, a long time.
In late 60s NYC Doyle skronked out the jams with sci-fi free no wave legends The Blue Humans. Perfect Sound Forever calls his sound "a mixture of African folk song delicacy and pure Albert Ayler overload." We would have to agree. For this performance Mr. Doyle will be collaborating with Ed Wilcox, head percussionist with Temple of Bon Matin, and multi media artist Jamie Harrar.

+ Robert Cheatam's jazznoise bastard Konx reunites, fuses, and explodes all over our stage just when we finally cleaned them up from 3 years ago.

She's A Beaut!

The images are derived from 1950s-era pin-up illustrations. The pieces exhibited are drawings created with pin and thread, traditional materials used in and for domestic tasks. By using these materials in conjunction with the images, I create a dichotomy between the traditional comfort of the models' beauty and the aggression inherent in the weapons they wield. This juxtaposition not only magnifies the power of the models' beauty, but also illustrates how their beauty, like the weapons they hold, can be used as a tool.

Till October 7th.

SULFURIC ACID TEST: by Paul Stanley Kubrick & CyberCrunk
Asks the Question: “WHAT IS REAL”?…

By blurring the lines even further between entertainment, journalism, media, domestic and foreign policy-politics…the movement of the youth in music art and film remind the powers that be; that there always has to be a new and better way to live…yet today, much of the pop culture only promotes a blind pursuit of profits and an acceptance that violence is a necessity, with few other options.

WHY?, who profits from this?…

WHAT subjects are of lessor importance? economic and moral bankruptcy in our countries leadership?..

How does Sulfuric Acid Test approach this illustration of our media age environment? by pushing the definitions of what makes up a song?, and what is a songs purpose ?..what makes up a genre of music? And what are it values really saying?. Exploring the boundaries of “reprocessed-media”, who owns it? and when. If they sell it to us, and we pay for it, can we alter its original form into collage and sell it back?..Artists have wrestled with this question for as long as art has existed…

so, take the test yourself, take the SULFURIC ACID TEST. And ask yourself…

“”WHAT IS REAL””?…

Justin Peake is a multi-talented producer from Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Peake mixes acoustic and electronic free jazz precisely with cutting edge machinery as well as working and performing as a drummer. His versatility is noteworthy. As a drummer, he works in traditional and free jazz groups, electronic ensembles, and filling in occasionally with local rock outfits, while maintaining an active production schedule for his solo work and other recording projects. Laicos Lamina is the newest of his projects, taking the sounds of Peake's beatmaking and improvised sample performances and unifying them into a display of his personal musical undercurrents.
Peake also received a college degree in philosophy. His experimental interests mostly involve cognitive circuitry, aesthetics, perception, improvisation, and environmental modeling. He engineers custom software modules in order to acheive his visions.

This fall, get ready for the hottest party of the season—the 10th annual CHOICE Celebration! It is certain to be HOT because never before has a party been so necessary!! In spite of the enormous amount of progress that has been made over the past three decades towards ensuring reproductive justice for the next generation, 2006 has seen a steady decline in that progress, as various policies and laws have been reversed or adjusted in ways that disadvantage women. As the year comes to a close and upcoming elections draw near, we celebrate the progress we have already made as well as the many opportunities for further progress that lie in our future!

There will be food and drink, door prizes and a silent auction, live music and performances, belly dancing and ordinary dancing ’til the AM!
Get ready to celebrate 10 years of young women's leadership! Join us for food, drink, door prizes, silent auction, live music, performances and dancing until the midnight hour. With performances by Theresa Davis, Michelle Friedman, dr. madelyn hatter, Jamarah Armani and The Eyes!

Everyone is welcome! So if you would like to enjoy a spectacular evening, invite your friends to stop by, eat, drink and be merry -- while fighting for justice -- with the Feminist Women's Health Center ...

Established in 1977, the Feminist Women's Health Center is a not-for-profit organization designed to empower women through service, education and advocacy. As Atlanta’s leading non-profit feminist women’s health resource, it has earned an outstanding reputation for providing quality care and community education while working to improve women's health.

They premiered Car Rides II; Durable Merge at "Mosaic," a showcase of Atlanta choreographers, produced by Duende Dance. And we love them.  Please join us for our premiere piece where indieMOVE is exploring all things that encompass pets."

Tunnels w/Outpost 9 September 30, 2006
9:00PM - - -
Price:  $12

A quartet of inventive musicians who produced sounds on the edge of jazz, Tunnels was the brainchild of Swiss vibraphonist and percussionist Marc Wagnon and bassist Percy Jones (Brand X), who was an essential element of the first recording put out by the band, titled With Percy Jones and released in 1994. Drummer Frank Katz, and multi-instrumentalist and composer Van Manakas were also brought on board and helped develop the spastic fusion style that would be evident on Tunnels' second album, Painted Rock, which was released by Wagnon's label, Buckyball Music, in 1999. The group resurfaced in 2002 with the release of Progressivity, which featured notable appearances from guitarist John Goodsall and violinist Mark Feldman.
