Julia Kristeva, the Outsider, and the Vanishing Maternal, a talk by Dr. Julia K. De Pree of Agnes Scott University as part of EYEDRUM's Word & Praxis Series
This talk will begin with an overview of Kristeva's life & work before delving into her ideas concerning the maternal body as a kind of vanishing point of consciousness, the uncanny quality of the maternal body as point of origin. Kristeva's theory of poetic language will then be introduced to highlight its relation to the fleeting and ultimately forbidden pleasures of this "locus amoenus." Dr. De Pree will emphasize Kristeva's work on semiotics, pre-linguistic/pre-Oedipal experience, melancholy and depression, and the outsider. There will also be a portion of an interview on video in which Kristeva speaks on the topic of the outsider. Throughout Dr. De Pree will try to show the continuing relevance of Kristeva's work, not just to poets and writers but to artists of whatever sort.
