ENDINGS and BEGININNINGS

There's nothing quite so mysterious as an end
or a beginning ...maybe because there is something
arbitrary about it. The two bookends are an attempt to bring order to a world that is chaotic and endless, to a painting that threatens never to be finished, to a revision
that won't stop, to a creative block that won't start ...even life itself, for those who believe (not us surely) in a prelife and an afterlife, prevents some of us from having a tight fit, a stop and a start time: when does the damn music start anyway??!! In times like these it's hard to say: some will say (perhaps john cage!!): 'the music neverstopped because it never started' or maybe, same yet very different, 'the
music never started because it never stopped.' Yes, there's something downright
SPOOKY
about starts and stops, living somewhere in its briar patch, the very definitions of 'liberal' or 'conservative' or 'radical' who are all about timing after all.Ah but improvisation! It starts when you wake up (really?!) and stops when
you go to sleep (not really...maybe) and yet, and an arbitrary yet, much like the economy we see now, it needs its own, freely chosen restraints, stoppages, groupings-which-fall-apart, starting lineup, a mark, a limit, a time-out to go forward, a fallback to push ahead, a benchmark to surpass. The sense of an ending as well as a beginning, will continue on thursday at ED--- oddly enough from 9pm till 11:30. Bring your squeaks and thumps, your ends w/o beginnings,
bring it all
on.
