>...in light of past posts about Unabomber to this list...apparently there was an NPR report as well...I also read a post to the progressive sociologist list (PSN-L) from a librarian at a university - do not recall which school - who had been asked by FBI agents if the school subscribed to Critical Sociology...some may remember the journal was called Insurgent Sociologist until the late 80s...note Examiner's characterization as "far-left"...Michael Hoover

> > UNABOM PROBERS FOCUS ON JOURNAL OF SOCIOLOGY

> > AP: Printed in Thursday 7/20/95 San Francisco Examiner

> > Eugene, ORE -- A list of subscribers to a far-left academic journal > has been subpoenaed by a grand jury in the Unabomber investigation.

> > Val Burris, a sociology professor at the University of Oregon and
> editor of the journal "Critical Sociology" was subpoenaed two weeks
> ago, the Los Angeles Times reported Wednesday.

> > Burris, contacted Wednesday, declined to comment.

> > George Grotz, spokesman for the FBI and the Unabom task force in San
> Francisco, acknowledged that the FBI was interested in some work at
> the university.

> > He did not say whether officials believe the Unabomber is a journal
> subscriber. Colleagues in Burris' department confirmed that he
> received the subpoena early this month.

> > The Unabomber has killed three people and wounded 23 in 16 package
> bombings since 1978.

> > Letters he has sent over the years claiming responsibility containing
> advanced sociological words and phrases, leading to the theory that he
> may have an academic background in sociology.

> > "Critical Sociology" began in 1969 as a newsletter aimed at linking
> far-left sociology students with like-minded sociologists. It has
> since evolved into an academic journal.
